Gathering all that scripture has to say about marriage, we see that God defines the institution as a permanent, lifelong commitment, between one man and one woman, for the purposes of companionship, enjoyment, procreation, proper sexual expression, and for each party to fulfill what is needed by the other. Further, it is given as a picture of the relationship between Christ and the church – see Ephesians 5.
Jesus, in teaching on marriage said, “What God has joined together, let no man separate” (Matthew 19:6). Marriage, according to God’s word, is not simply an expression of emotion, or being “in love,” but rather an expression of commitment, and is intended to last, not until the feeling is gone, but “until death do us part.”
