A hypocrite is a phony, an actor (it’s original meaning), one who pretends to be one thing when he is really another. Christians who understand that being saved from the power and penalty of sin does not mean that we are free of its presence, and will not be in this this life, are under no delusion of having “arrived,” and do not put themselves forward as such. We openly confess that we are still sinful, and therefore are not hypocrites.
Sadly, there are some Christians, thankfully few, who do think that they are without sin, and when they prove otherwise, the title of hypocrite is appropriate.
This fits helpfully with last week’s question, if we as Christians have a proper estimation of ourselves we will not open ourselves up to the charge of hypocrisy.
